Swords

Thoughts, Intellect, Strife, Mental Activity

Element: Air / Archangel: Raphael / Direction: East / Season: Spring / Letter: Vave / Aquarius, Libra, Gemini

Ace of Swords

             (yod)

Essence:

An idea and opportunity

Advice:

Take the Sword!

  • The birth of a new idea.

  • This card is the proverbial ace up your sleeve.

  • A potential for a new job, a fresh start, a sudden opportunity or idea, clarity, courage.

  • From the ‘Hand of God’ or ‘Hand of an Angel’

  • In both the Ace of Swords and Ace of Wands, the hand is upright and the fist is closed. This is an active gesture which indicates one should ‘grab’ the offer, or ‘make it happen’ by taking action. Swords and Wands represent Yang energy, and the forceful masculine elements of Air and Fire. In the Aces of Cups and Pentacles, the palm is open and facing upwards, implying you should be open to receiving an offer. Cups and Pentacles are Yin energy, and represent the receptive feminine elements of Water and Earth.

Symbols:

  • Hidden Thumb = Anything ‘hidden’ in Tarot is a symbol of mysticism, the spiritual realm, psychic and premonitions. The hidden thumb suggests knowledge gained by flashes of insight, the signature of inspiration which comes from outside you. Thus you are guided to listen and trust your instincts. Your first thought, is your best thought.

  • Crown and Swords = Victory. A winning idea. A proposal of something.

  • Palm = on right of crown is a sign of victory. The palm represented immortality in ancient Egypt and was sacred in many religions. In Christianity, the palm is associated with Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem and is celebrated on Palm Sunday.

  • Olive = Left side of crown, represents peace.

  • Yod = 6 of them. Hebrew letter from the word God representing power and energy available / fate. Yods represent the flames of Spirit and the creative seeds of thoughts and ideas emanating from the spirit world. The Yod (י) is the tenth letter of the Hebrew alphabet, representing a voiced palatal approximant sound (like 'y' in "yes") or the vowel /i/ or /e/. As the smallest Hebrew letter, it symbolizes humility, the divine spark, and the "Hand of God" in creation.

  • Mountains = Obstacles to overcome. Though this higher vantage point means we can now see the ‘bigger picture’ and thus the ideas can flow freely.

Tree of Life = Aces in Tarot connect to the Crown Sephirah, the topmost of the Sephirot and Tree of Life, known as Kether.

Angel = Metatron

Chakra = Crown Chakra

II of Swords

Lord of Peace Restored

Essence:

Peace held in suspension.

Advice:

Deal with what you have been putting off.

  • Trying to ‘listen’ for the best course of action to take.

  • Indecision. Remember to be unbiased in judgement. Devoid of physical sight, the figure relies solely on their intelligence and inner guidance. Blind yourself to any distracting noise and focus on what you truly want.

  • The ability to move outside ourselves and look to the Universe for answers. The woman in this card appears to be in a deep and deliberate meditation, trying to hear the Power of God, angels, the universe. She is training to listen. “The significant problems we face cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them.”

Symbols:

  • Two swords over heart = The woman crosses the swords over her heart chakra. At a mundane level, this suggests she is trying to emotionally protect herself from something

  • Two crossed swords pointing up = you are ready to fight.

  • Blindfold over third eye = Blocking out a situation. Third eye. The woman is in spiritual training, removing her earthly senses so that she can focus instead on the development of physic abilities.

  • Sea = Emotions are calm.

  • Rocks In The Water = Stepping stones, creating a path or resting points as you journey

  • Bench = ‘taking a time out’. Time to reflect, meditate or examine a situation in more detail.

  • Crescent Moon = Waxing from left to right. Subconscious and intuition. It is connected with spiritual thought and psychic abilities.

Sephirah = Chokhmah, meaning wisdom.

Archangel = Raziel

III of Swords

Lord of Sorrow

Essence:

Sadness

Advice:

Feel it fully but don't let it define you.

  • The piercing of the heart. A necessary truth that cannot be avoided.

  • Emotional pain, heartbreak, grief, separation, truth revealed, sorrow, loss, clarity through suffering. The moment illusion dissolves and reality is felt fully.

  • The Three brings manifestation. What was once internal is now experienced. In Swords (Air), this manifests as truth cutting through the emotional body. The heart and mind meet here, often painfully, but with precision. This is not cruelty, but clarity. A truth that liberates, even as it wounds.

Symbols:

  • Three Swords = The number three represents expression and manifestation. In Swords, this is truth made real through experience. The triad can reflect mind, body, and spirit, or past, present, and future, all touched by the same truth.

  • Heart = The center of emotion, love, and vulnerability. The heart here is open, not protected, symbolizing exposure. There is no armor - this is raw, direct feeling.

  • Piercing = The swords do not hover, they penetrate. This indicates truth that is no longer avoidable. Something has “gone through” the emotional body, leaving awareness in its wake.

  • Storm Clouds = Turbulence, emotional unrest, and the temporary nature of suffering. Storms pass, but while present, they demand to be felt.

  • Rain = Cleansing, release, and emotional expression. Tears as medicine. What falls from above returns the system to balance.

Tree of Life = Three corresponds to Binah, the sphere of Understanding. This is sorrow that brings wisdom. The Great Mother energy - grief as initiation, not punishment.

Chakra = Heart Chakra (Anahata). Where love, grief, and truth coexist. This card opens the heart through contrast, deepening the capacity to feel.

IV of Swords
Lord of Rest

Essence:
Sacred pause.
Rest that restores power.
Stillness before re-entry.

Advice:

Retreat and REST

  • Take time to rest.

  • Stability through meditation, rest, retreat, solitude, peace. Recuperation needed because of mental or physical exhaustion or serious illness. A necessary withdrawal after strain.

  • This is not indulgent rest, it is intentional restoration. A truce, not permanent peace. This card appears after difficulty, marking a sacred pause to gather strength, restore clarity, and prepare for what comes next. Stop replaying what has happened. The mind heals in stillness.

  • The Four brings structure and stability. In Swords (Air), this is the mind at rest—no longer fighting, but not yet re-engaged. Healing happens here.

Symbols:

  • Tomb = In Tarot, never physical death. A place of rest, retreat, and withdrawal. A chosen time-out for recovery.

  • Rest (Active) = Not passive or indulgent. This is an act of self-preservation and self-healing. Restoration as discipline.

  • Armor Removed = The knight has laid down protection. He feels safe enough to release vigilance. A temporary surrender of defense.

  • Lying Down = Savasana, the corpse pose. A symbolic death of activity to reach renewal, liberation from strain, and deep restoration.

  • Stone = Cold, still, grounding. A return to the body and the physical plane for recovery.

  • Stained Glass = The house of God, a window to the soul. Spiritual protection and quiet connection to something higher.

  • PAX (in the stained glass window) = Peace. A period of stillness granted, not permanent but necessary.

  • Three Swords Hanging = Past conflicts, battles already fought. These are no longer active, they are integrated experiences.

  • The Remaining Sword = Set aside, not gone. Represents the next action, the next decision, or the return to engagement when ready.

  • Placement of Swords = Third eye (insight), throat (communication), solar plexus (will). These centers are recalibrating through rest.

Sephirah = Chesed - mercy, restoration, and benevolence. Healing through grace and allowing.

Archangel = Tzadkiel - associated with mercy, compassion, and transmutation through rest.

Chakra = Heart Chakra - restoration through stillness, allowing the system to return to balance and coherence.

In occasional really bad cases the card can indicate external treachery - somebody deliberately attempting to undermine or damage us. Especially if paired with VII or IX of swords.

V of Swords

Lord of Defeat

Essence:
Conflict without resolution.
Winning that costs too much.
A lesson in defeat or defeating others.

Advice:

Choose your battles.

  • Feeling frustrated.

  • Doing what is best for you, but at a cost.

  • Acting in your own favor.

  • Conflict, tension, hostility, mind games, competition, hollow victory, dishonor. Winning that does not feel like winning. The aftermath of struggle where something is lost, trust, connection, integrity.

  • The Five brings disruption and instability. In Swords (Air), this is conflict expressed through the mind. Arguments, strategy, and dominance. Even in victory, there is imbalance. This card asks what was gained and what was sacrificed.

Symbols:

  • Figure Holding Swords = The apparent winner, yet the posture suggests unease rather than peace.

  • Others Walking Away = Defeat, withdrawal, or conscious disengagement. Not all losses are failures.

  • Scattered Swords = Words and actions left behind. Conflict that is unresolved or mishandled.

  • Expressions = Smugness, resentment, frustration. Emotional imbalance despite outcome.

  • Open Landscape = Nothing hidden. The conflict is exposed and cannot be undone.

  • Unsettled Sky = Lingering tension. The energy of conflict remains even after it ends.

Tree of Life = Five corresponds to Geburah, severity and force. Conflict as a harsh but clarifying teacher.

Chakra = Solar Plexus Chakra, power, control, and will. Imbalance leads to dominance, defensiveness, or power struggles.

NOTE between 5 and 7 of swords:

  • 5 = conflict or self interest you can see

  • 7 = strategy or self interest you can’t see

VI of Swords
Lord of Earned Success

Essence:

A crossing.

Advice:

Enjoy transition to a better place.

  • The passage from turbulence to calm. A quiet transition toward peace.

  • Better times are coming.

  • Travel over water.

  • Moving on, transition, recovery, leaving difficulty behind, mental clarity returning, journey, distance, healing. A shift away from chaos toward stillness - often gradual, not immediate.

  • The Six brings harmony and balance after disruption. In Swords (Air), this is the mind finding relief after strain. This is not sudden victory, but steady movement forward. The storm is behind you, though its imprint may remain. Progress is made through acceptance, not resistance.

Symbols:

  • Boat = A vessel of transition. Represents movement across emotional or mental states. You are not where you were, but not fully arrived either. This is the in-between.

  • Water (Rough to Calm) = The contrast between choppy and smooth water reflects the shift from distress to peace. The journey itself is the healing process.

  • Figure(s) Seated = Stillness, reflection, and inward focus. There is a quietness here, less action, more integration. Healing often requires withdrawal.

  • Ferryman = Guidance, whether external or internal. This can represent support from others or the part of you that knows the way forward.

  • Six Swords in Boat = The past is carried forward. Experiences, thoughts, and wounds are not discarded, they are integrated. You move on with wisdom, not without memory.

Tree of Life = Six corresponds to Tiphareth, the sphere of harmony and balance. This is restoration after challenge. Beauty found through alignment and truth.

Chakra = Third Eye Chakra - clarity, perspective, and the ability to see beyond immediate difficulty. A widening of awareness that allows for peace.

VII of Swords
Lord of Unstable Effort

Essence:
Hidden motives.
Acting outside the rules.

Advice:

Use your wit.

  • Dishonesty. Strategy in the shadows.

  • Sneaky.

  • Take what you can get.

  • Deception, secrecy, manipulation, lies, cheating, theft, hidden motives, self-sabotage, acting alone, avoidance. Something may be taken from you, or you may be taking from others. Not all is as it seems.

  • Frustration.

  • Stay alert to back-stabbing in work, someone may be trying to undermine you behind your back or steal your ideas.

  • The Seven brings testing and strategy. In Swords (Air), this is the mind operating independently, often outside of rules or expectations. This can be clever and adaptive, or dishonest and undermining. The question is not just what is being done, but why.

Symbols:

  • Figure Carrying Swords = Taking what is not fully theirs, or acting in secrecy. A lone operator, relying on wit rather than alignment.

  • Two Swords Left Behind = Incomplete action. Something is overlooked, unfinished, or will be discovered later.

  • Looking Back = Anxiety, awareness of risk, or fear of being caught. Even in cleverness, there is tension.

  • Light Footed Movement = Sneakiness, subtlety, and calculated action. This is not direct confrontation, but indirect maneuvering.

  • Camp in Background = Structure, community, or established order. The figure is acting outside of it, either escaping or undermining it.

  • Imbalance of Action = Not fully thought through. Strategy may be clever but lacks integrity or long-term stability.

Tree of Life = Seven corresponds to Netzach, the sphere of desire and instinct. When imbalanced, it can lead to acting on impulse, self-interest, or avoidance rather than truth.

Chakra = Solar Plexus Chakra - personal power and will. When distorted, this becomes manipulation, control, or self-serving behavior.

Note:
This card can point to external deception. Someone acting behind your back or internal dishonesty, where you are not being truthful with yourself.

In higher expression, it can also indicate independent thinking, strategic intelligence, and the ability to move differently - making your own rules rather than following the crowd.

Can have a positive, make your own rules and don’t play the same game as everyone else. Do what you need to do.

VIII of Swords
Lord of Shortened Force (Interference)

Essence:
Self-imposed limitation.
Fear mistaken for reality.
The power to free yourself.

Advice:

You know what to do. Take off the blindfold and pick up a sword!

  • Blocked.

  • A prison of the mind that feels real, but is not absolute.

  • Non-movement, feeling powerless and trapped, stuck, victimhood, mental fog, confusion, restriction, limiting beliefs. A warning. You must free yourself from what is holding you in place. The pause is not forced - it is sustained by perception.

  • The Eight represents restriction and structure. In Swords (Air), this is the mind creating boundaries that feel immovable. Yet unlike true confinement, this situation contains choice. The limitation is real in experience, but not in truth.

Symbols:

  • Blindfold = Hoodwinked. Unable to see clearly or make decisions on solid footing. Perception is obscured, not reality itself.

  • Loose Bindings = Not truly trapped. The ties are not tight—there is space for movement. Freedom is available, but not yet claimed.

  • Swords Surrounding = A mental barrier. Thoughts, fears, and beliefs create the illusion of a cage. These same swords could be used to cut free.

  • Distance from the Castle = Separation from security, home, and inner stability. The mind has created distance from what is actually available.

  • Ground (Uneven/Waterlogged) = Emotional instability beneath the surface. Difficulty moving forward comes from lack of grounding.

  • Stillness of the Figure = Pausing, hesitation, fear of making the wrong move. Not action, but indecision, keeps her in place.

  • Open Space Between Swords = There is a path. It is not fully blocked. Movement is possible with awareness and courage.

  • Tree of Life = Eight corresponds to Hod, the sphere of the intellect. When imbalanced, it creates over-analysis, distortion, and mental loops that disconnect from truth.

Chakra = Third Eye Chakra - clouded perception, illusion, and overthinking. When cleared, it restores clarity and the ability to see what is real versus imagined.

Reminder:

The only limits are the ones you place on yourself. Fear of failure, fear of judgment, or fear of the unknown may be holding you here. But what binds you can also free you.

IX of Swords
Lord of Cruelty

Essence:

Anxiety. The moment before release.

Advice:

Interrupt the spiral. Quiet the mind.

  • Feeling anxious, depressed or lonely. Saturation from worrisome thoughts, an overactive mind, anxiety, nightmares.

  • The weight of the mind turned inward. Suffering that lives in thought.

  • Anxiety, worry, sleeplessness, fear, guilt, mental anguish, overthinking, dread. The mind loops, amplifies, and creates a reality that feels inescapable. Often, this suffering is internal - intensified in isolation and silence.

  • The Nine represents culmination. In Swords (Air), this is the peak of mental strain. Thoughts have become overwhelming, no longer tools but tormentors. Yet this is also a threshold—what has reached its height cannot continue unchanged. Awareness is close.

Symbols:

  • Figure Sitting Up in Bed = Sudden waking, distress, and intrusion of thought into rest. The inability to escape the mind, even in sleep.

  • Hands Covering Face = Overwhelm, shame, or grief. A desire to block out reality, or the inability to face what is present.

  • Dark Background = Isolation, the unconscious, and the internal world. This is a private suffering, often unseen by others.

  • Quilt/Bed Covering = Subconscious imagery, patterns, and inherited beliefs. What lies beneath the surface continues to influence the mind.

Tree of Life = Nine corresponds to Yesod, the sphere of the subconscious and illusion. This is where thought forms take shape and can distort perception if not grounded.

  • The Ten is completion. In Swords (Air), this is the full collapse of a mental cycle. There is nothing left to analyze, fix, or fight. The mind has reached its limit. What remains is surrender. Though it appears final, this ending creates the conditions for renewal.

Symbols:

  • The swords on spine = Acupuncture needles, suggesting a systematic chakra cleansing, or renewal of mind, body, and spirit is taking place. Energy is being released through the very place it was held.

  • Sign of benediction = Forgive those who have brought you to this state. A gesture of release, not defeat. The suffering is acknowledged, and then let go. This shows he is still alive because you need hand muscles to make the sign of Benediction (Benediction also in the Hierophant).

  • The person is still alive = We know this because the benediction position can only be made with active muscular control. Yet part of life is over. This is the death of a cycle, not the self.

  • Colors = Black is the color of mourning and death. The dark sky contrasts with the vivid yellow of the golden dawn (hope and new beginning). Yellow symbolizes alertness and mental energy. As the black dissipates, a new awareness is rising.

  • Mountains = Obstacles that once loomed large now sit in the distance. From this finality, perspective is regained.

  • Stillness of the body = No more struggle. The fight has ended. This stillness is not weakness - it is completion.

Sephirah = Malkuth, the material world, where all cycles manifest and conclude. This is the end point made real.
