4. About Imbolc (In the Belly)
-
Imbolc is an ancient Celtic fire festival celebrated around February 1, marking the cross quarter between the winter solstice and the spring equinox.
-
It is traditionally associated with the first stirrings of spring, the lactation of ewes, and the return of light after winter’s darkness.
-
Historically, Imbolc was a time of purification, preparation, and quiet renewal rather than outward celebration.
-
Imbolc is closely linked to Brigid, who embodies fire, healing, poetry, smithcraft, and protection. In pre-Christian Ireland, Brigid was honored as a goddess of fertility, inspiration, and sacred flame, especially at Imbolc. With Christianization, she was syncretized into Saint Brigid, and many Imbolc customs were preserved through her feast day.
-
Traditional practices include lighting candles, cleaning the home, making Brigid’s crosses, and leaving offerings for blessing and protection.
-
Imbolc emphasizes potential rather than completion, honoring what is beginning to grow beneath the surface. In the belly / Ewe's milk
-
Spiritually, it represents hope, resilience, and the promise of renewal even when winter still lingers.
-
In ancient Ireland, it was said that The Cailleach, the Crone of winter, went out on February 1 to gather firewood. If the day was bright, clear, and dry, it meant she was stockpiling fuel for a long winter yet to come. But if the day was dark, wet, or stormy, the wood would be useless, and the Cailleach would relinquish her hold, allowing Brigid to usher in the warming days of spring.
This ancient weather divination is widely believed to be the origin of what later became Groundhog Day. -
Imbolc is an important threshold festival that invites reflection, intention-setting, and gentle alignment with the returning light.
-
The earth is awakening.

we take a moment to name what is stirring within us.

Brigid, Warrior Saint,
Stand with us at the turning of the world.
Brigid of the Well,
Wash injustice from the earth.
Let truth rise clear,
Let what is poisoned be made clean.
Brigid the Healer,
Lay fire to the wound and water to the ache.
Bind what was broken,
Restore what still longs to live.
Brigid of the Anvil,
Strengthen the weary.
Forge courage where fear has ruled.
Brigid of the Bard,
Give voice to what must be spoken.
Sing justice awake.
Brigid of Fire,
Burn cruelty away,
Light the way for peace to walk among us.
By well and flame,
By word and will—
Justice be right.
Healing be whole.
Peace be real.
So mote it be."
