4. About Ostara (The Awakening / Emergence)
Read:
Ostara is an ancient seasonal festival celebrated at the spring equinox, around March 20–21, when day and night stand in perfect balance. It marks the turning point where light begins to overtake darkness, signaling the true arrival of spring.
It is traditionally associated with fertility, renewal, and the visible awakening of the earth - buds forming, seeds sprouting, and life returning in full expression after winter’s dormancy.
Historically, Ostara was less about quiet preparation (as in Imbolc) and more about emergence, movement, and activation. What was held in the “belly” is now rising to the surface.
Ostara is often linked to the Germanic goddess Eostre (or Ostara), a deity of dawn, fertility, and new beginnings. Symbols associated with her - hares and eggs - represent fertility, creation, and the cycles of life. These symbols later carried into modern Easter traditions.
One of the most enduring folk stories tells of Eostre coming upon a wounded bird at the end of winter, its wings frozen and unable to fly. Moved by compassion, she transformed the bird into a hare so it could survive the cold earth and run freely again.
Yet the hare still retained a memory of its former nature. Once a year, in honor of Eostre and the miracle of its transformation, it would lay eggs - symbols of life, renewal, and the mystery of becoming. These eggs were said to be golden and brightly colored, carrying the energy of spring and the return of life.
Traditional practices include decorating eggs, planting seeds, spending time in nature, and honoring the balance of light and dark. Rituals often focus on growth, intention in action, and aligning with the expanding energy of the season.
Ostara emphasizes balance and becoming—a moment where potential meets action. What was imagined, seeded, and nurtured is now ready to grow.
Spiritually, it represents rebirth, harmony, and forward movement. It is a time to step into alignment with your intentions and begin creating in the physical world.
In folklore, the return of birds, the quickening of animals, and the lengthening of days were seen as signs that life had fully reawakened. The earth is no longer stirring - it is alive and rising.
Ostara is a threshold of equilibrium and expansion, inviting both reflection and action, grounding and growth.
The light has returned.
And now, so do you.
5. Action
Each person has their own egg and their own tarot cards.
EACH:
Place the Temperance card under the egg → balance of Earth.
Then place around the egg: The Fool, Ace of Pentacles, Justice, The Empress
Sprinkle seeds in the cauldron. Add a bit of Earth and Water.
When everyone has their egg and cards placed before them:
“As above, so below.
As within, so without.
As the Universe, so the soul.
As the Earth awakens,
so does the path before us all.”
“As the earth awakens,
we take a moment to name what is rising.
What is ready to emerge?
What are we ready to begin?
What are we willing to nurture into life?
What desires are we ready to bring into form?
What within us seeks the light?”
Silent reflection
Each member is welcome to pick up their egg and share what is awakening within them.
Put egg back on Temperance card.
6. Spell for Ostara (Balance & Becoming)
Light 2 candles (representing balance)
Place extra egg in the center (symbol of new life and creation)
Read aloud:
“On this day of equal light and night,
we stand at the threshold of becoming.
What was held in darkness now rises.
What was dreamed now takes root.
With the energy of earth awakening,
We call forward growth, renewal, and life.
May what we nurture flourish.
May what we begin be guided.
May what is ours find us each with ease.
(Pause - place hands gently around the egg)
For Humanity
Read:
"This egg, a vessel of life,
represents not only what we carry -
but the living body of the Earth herself.
May the soil be nourished.
May the waters be restored.
May all beings be held in balance and care.
May humanity remember its place
within the great web of life -
not above it, but within it.
May what awakens in me
serve something greater than me.
As the light returns,
so do we.
As the earth awakens,
so does our shared path.”
(Optional: Each person holds their egg and silently place an intention into it. For themselves and for the world, before returning it to the center.)
"Energy and elements, attend to me —
The spell is cast, so mote it be."
7. Open and Release the Circle
